EMG manifestations of muscle fatigue development during low-force work

چکیده

135 General discussion In the general introduction, it was stated that occupational work often involves prolonged sustained low-force repetitive activities and a number of recent trends may further increase the prevalence of this type of work. Although force levels are relatively low, muscle fatigue or physiological signs of localized muscle fatigue may develop during low-intensity work. Localized muscle fatigue in the trapezius muscle may be a precursor of work-related upper extremity disorders and may reduce performance of employees. Localized muscle fatigue is usually defined as an exercise-induced decline in the maximal force or power capacity of the muscle (Bigland-Ritchie and Woods 1984). However, during low-force activities a reduction in force generating capacity does not necessarily occur while physiological changes affecting the capacity of the muscle do (e.g. Moussavi et al. 1989). To evaluate muscle fatigue electromyographic (EMG) indicators of fatigue are commonly used, i.e. a compression of the power spectrum towards lower frequencies accompanied by an increase in amplitude of the EMG signal (De Luca 1984, Basmajian and De Luca 1985).

Background and aims   Recordings of electrical activity in the muscle and surface electromyography (EMG) have been widely used in the field of applied physiology. In parallel to  recording of the EMG, the detectable low-frequency vibration signal generated by the skeletal  muscle has been known and well documented. As the nature of the signal has been progressively   revealed, the term of mec...

EMG-based Fatigue Assessment During Endurance Testing With Different VT Protocols

BACKGROUND: Muscle fatigue can be defined as the failure of a muscle to maintain a reasonably expected force output. The multivariate approach to fatigue assessment is used because the multiple (EMG) feature provides more information than anyone. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a method of assessing muscle fatigue during endurance testing at 50% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) using electro...

Task variation during simulated, repetitive, low-intensity work--influence on manifestation of shoulder muscle fatigue, perceived discomfort and upper-body postures.

UNLABELLED Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are increasing due to industrialisation of work processes. Task variation has been suggested as potential intervention. The objectives of this study were to investigate, first, the influence of task variation on electromyographic (EMG) manifestations of shoulder muscle fatigue and discomfort; second, noticeable postural shoulder changes over tim...

Electromyography for assessment of pain in low back muscles.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Pain is currently evaluated with "subjective" methods (eg, patient self-report). This study aimed to test whether fatigue indexes are able to accurately discriminate between subjects with and subjects without low back pain. SUBJECTS Sixty subjects separated into 2 groups--a group with low back pain (n=30) and a group without low back pain (n=30)--participated in this st...

Detecting and Predicting Muscle Fatigue during Typing By SEMG Signal Processing and Artificial Neural Networks

Introduction: Repetitive strain injuries are one of the most prevalent problems in occupational diseases. Repetition, vibration and bad postures of the extremities are physical risk factors related to work that can cause chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Repetitive work on a computer with low level contraction requires the posture to be maintained for a long time, which can cause muscle fatigu...
